Day 11 24/8/2019

Nuremberg

To we woke upon Nuremberg.

Nuremberg was 90% destroyed during the 2nd World War so a lot of its buildings are only 80 years old but they have been rebuilt from pictures found hidden during the war so some of the history is still there.

Even with the heavy bombing only 6500 civilians lost their lives during this time when there was a population of over 80000 in the city.  This is all due to the beer manufacturers who had dug out massive cellars in the sandstone hills under the city, these were turned into bomb shelters during the war and subsequently saved the lives of so many people. The destruction of the town was chosen by Hitler because of its Trade and its railway (one of the biggest in Germany).

Nuremberg is the 2nd largest city in German state of Barvaria and records go back until 1050.

Hitler chose Nuremberg for his annual Nazi party rallies and later became famous for The Nuremberg War Trials.  Today the city is famous  for its trade fairs, toy production and its Christmas market which is the largest and busiest in Germany.

We went to the Zeppelin field parade ground where hitler made all of his speeches to hundreds of thousands of troops and where all the rallies were held.  The guide told us the young Nazi boys had to walk to the rallies from wherever they lived , some taking up to 3 months to get there while the older members were allowed to used the trains.  It was called the Zeppelin parade ground because Count Zeppelin landed one of his first aircraft there.

We spent our free time after our walking tour walking around the market place some tasting the bratwurst sausages. Then back on the bus to the ship where we left port straight away to sail to Regensburg.

When we got back on ship the waiters were dressed in barvarian attire to serve suckling pig with all the trimmings for lunch.

Lucky I have walked over 5 kms this morning.
