Day 10 23/08/2019

Bamberg (Pronounced Bumbag by our guide ðŸ˜‚)

Today was official sleep  in day. The ship doesn’t arrive into Bamberg until 2.30 so we can have a sleep in yay.....

Which encourage us to take part in usual breakfast in the restaurant then a typical Bavarian breakfast of meat loaf, sausages and beer in the lounge called Fruhschoppen (this means an alchoholic drink served before midday in company) Served at 10.30 am. All served with sauerkraut and Bavarian pretzels. All very yummy I am sure. I did taste a little of just to say I had.

We cannot say we are not fed on this cruise we go to each meal saying we are not going to each much but attack each plate like we have never seen food before.

After he ship docked at 2.30  we are immediately off on our walking tour of Bamberg no choices today the whole ship is doing the same thing.

Bamberg is located at the entrance to the Main-Danube Canal, Bamberg has such an abundance of heritage buildings it is listed a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Bamberg has 70000 population of which 10% are students.

Bamberg was not bombed during the war.

We  were bussed into town where we find the Beer festival in full swing but according to our guide not too busy until at least 6.00pm.  We are given a tour of the places of interest in the town. A cathedral of course where the body of Pope Clementine VII 1523 is entombed,  he is the pope who was only in office for 9 months before he mysteriously died. Well the mystery was solved when Bamberg got permission to have his body exhumed to find out why he had died, only to find that he had in fact been murdered.

Apparently during his time he wasn’t doing as he was told so they disposed of him.

We also visited the courthouse and the Bishop Popes rose garden.

Bamberg is situated on the Pegnitz river which runs throughout the town looking  across the river it is referred to as little Venice the Houses come right down to the water and you can access them from the river.

We then had free time to take in the streets of Bamberg and try out the famous Rauchbiers smoked beers which I thought was a lot like stout.  I like it a lot but could only have a taste.  Our guide also raves about Hoffman’s popcorn which did seem very popular and every second person had a huge bag of and as this is one thing on my eating list that I can eat we made a beeline to it, and it didn’t disappoint, but I think I will be eating it until the end of the cruise lol.

Back to the ship by 5.45pm  when we are sailing towards the Main/Danube Canal.

The ship is cruising overnight to Nuremberg going thru another 7 locks the locks are getting deeper some of them are18  mts deep.
